Heart Foundation champions fish oil
Fish oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can be good for brain function, and may provide relief from arthritis and support healthy eyes.
It is also a well-known healthy skin vitamin due to its association with blood flow, which assists with skin cell maintenance.
This heart support is the element of fish oil supplementation that the Heart Foundation has highlighted in a recent statement, based on research by Deloitte Access Economics.
It suggests that Australian taxpayers could save up to $4.2 billion if people with a history of heart attack began taking fish oil regularly.
The Heart Foundation already recommends that adults consume 500 milligrams of omega-3s daily – from oily fish or supplements – to assist with issues such as control of blood clotting and the building of brain cells and membranes.
Dr Robert Grenfell, clinical issues director at the National Heart Foundation of Australia, says that while fish oil can be beneficial, it also needs to be combined with other factors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
Regular exercise and proper nutrition can assist with fish oil supplementation and support other body functions, and are also recommended by the Heart Foundation to help maintain heart function.
